Blog

This would'nt be a complete website without a personal blog! I'll post what I feel like as well as any updates with site. Posts that are older than 2025 were from a previous personal site I started in 2021, right after my ciscoskills website. I think one of things I've learned about writing online is that once you start with certain content its hard to break out of that. So what I'm hoping with this little blog space is a way to mix my technology passions with some life events, Enjoy!😊

Quiet On the Homefront...Not Really

So although its been a little quiet over here, my life hasn't! Let's just say I've been trying to get a handle on my next career move and to what I'm finding is, this current job market is not great. I'm still working at my current job but our team is getting smaller and the project that I'm working on is starting to see the sunset on the horizon within the next year or so.

Firewall ACL Naming

One thing that can be suggestive is naming conventions... It has to have meaning to you and the organization. I have seen some pretty interesting naming conventions and although I make no promises that what I have is the end all of naming conventions, but since I have been doing this for while I find this a pretty good system and easy to understand. So let's get started!

Switch Administration

This is just a short little update with a another section down learn about Switch Administration within the CCIE section. We are talking about MAC address, L2 MTU and Errdisable. I keep moving up on the topics so the next topic will likely be spanning-tree so stay subscribed to RSS feed or check back often! I have also adjusted the categories, anything with CCIE is going to be about the CCIE section. Instead of putting that into the general category, a little house-keeping as I'm still getting this website organized. - Enjoy! 😊

FMC Changing the IP Address

Well..if you were wondering if changing the IP address of Cisco FMC still works of when I originally posted six years ago...It does! I was running FMC 7.4.2.2 at the time and following my own advice works pretty well. It's also funny that although working working with a different company, we had the same goal -- Migrating data centers!

Who's New?

When I first had an idea for this site I wanted something that would stay pretty consistent. However humans although may not like the idea of change, often change things frequently. If you read through some of the past posts you'll find that although this site was a spur-of-the-moment idea I wanted to really make sure its something I'll enjoy making content on. As well as an is easy way to find information you may be looking for. Although some people might enjoy my blog posts I also wanted to make sure the CCIE section is a good documentation resource. So with a couple of nobs turned, buttons pressed and switches thrown this site is now using Material for MkDocs

Rename Network Interfaces

Something kind of interesting I stumbled on was moving some virtual machines around to a different ESXi host that doesn't have to same storage backend. So they were copied over manually and then imported within VMware vCenter. The machines were running Red Hat and although they were connecting to the same network the operating system was using a different interface name like ens33 instead of ens192.

VLAN Technologies

Alright this is just an update that VLAN Technologies section within the CCIE section is completed. I have been working on this for the past of week and have also updated the layout of the CCIE page by putting the current version that is out as of this writing.

DNS Zone Scopes

Microsoft DNS servers have a pretty cool feature called DNS zone scopes which was introduced back with Server 2016 and higher. I knew about this feature a while ago as I had to make it work with a project and it worked wonderful back in 2018. Recently it came up again on a different project that I'm working and although a different use case it also worked like it should. So here's to zone scopes!

LAB: What is BGP

So we are kicking the tires a bit and going right into a lab that I've got on my Cisco_CML repository. When I was looking through the CCIE exam topics this lab that I did about ~3 weeks ago does not really fit into the CCIE docs, but I think its a good way to kick the tires. If you got Cisco Modeling Labs for the first time this is a good lab to try it out.
